Quick answer

About the Image Converter

Img Stop Image Converter changes the file format of your pictures in one step. It reads any image your browser can open, including JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF and BMP, and saves it as JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF or BMP. You can mix formats in one batch. Each file keeps its pixel width and height; only the format and file size change.

Different formats suit different jobs. JPG is the most compatible for photos, PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, WebP and AVIF give much smaller files for websites, and BMP is an old uncompressed format some software still needs. AVIF saving depends on your browser; if it is not supported, the tool saves a PNG and tells you.

When to use it

  • Turn a mixed folder of GIF, BMP and PNG files into JPG for an old system.
  • Convert website images to WebP or AVIF to make pages load faster.
  • Change an AVIF picture into JPG so it opens in older apps and on older phones.
  • Save a picture as BMP for software or machines that only accept BMP.
  • Convert a JPG to PNG before editing so further saves do not lose quality.

Tips for the best result

  • Use JPG for photos that must open anywhere, PNG for graphics with transparency, and WebP for websites.
  • Converting a JPG to PNG will not improve quality; it only stops further loss. The PNG will usually be bigger.
  • For animated GIFs, only the first frame is converted, because JPG, PNG and BMP are still images.
  • If AVIF output turns into PNG, your browser cannot save AVIF yet. A current Chrome or Edge version usually can.

Frequently asked questions

Which image format is best?

It depends on use. JPG is best for photos that must open everywhere. PNG is best for logos, screenshots and transparent images. WebP and AVIF give the smallest files for websites. BMP is only for older software that asks for it. There is no single best format for every job.

Can I convert an image to AVIF?

Yes, if your browser can save AVIF. Choose AVIF under Convert to and set the quality. When the browser does not support AVIF saving, the tool saves the image as PNG instead and shows a short note, so you always get a working file.

What happens to transparent areas when I convert to JPG?

JPG and BMP cannot store transparency, so transparent parts are filled with a color. White is the default. Use the Background for transparent areas picker to choose any other color, such as black or your brand color.

Does converting change the image size in pixels?

No. The width and height stay the same. Only the file format and the file size change. To change the pixel size, use the Resize Image tool before or after you convert.

Can I convert different formats in one go?

Yes. You can add PNG, GIF, BMP, WebP and other images together. All of them are converted to the one format you choose, with the same settings. Download them one by one or all together in a ZIP file.
