Drop a PNG or JPG on the Img Stop Image to DXF Converter, check the blue outlines (red are holes) in the preview, adjust the threshold or smoothing if needed, type the width in mm and click Convert. You get an R12 ASCII DXF with closed polylines in millimetres, plus an SVG with the same paths.
About the Image to DXF Converter
The Img Stop Image to DXF Converter traces dark shapes in a picture into closed vector loops that laser cutters, CNC routers, plasma cutters and CAD programs can follow. Holes inside letters and shapes are kept as their own loops on a separate layer, so the inside and outside are cut correctly.
Choose Outlines for shapes, Centre line for single-line strokes for engraving and pen plotters, or Edges to trace the lines of a photo. Small specks are ignored, curves are smoothed, and the size is set in millimetres with the correct Y axis. The image is traced in your browser and never uploaded.
Key features
- Clean closed loopsEvery outline is a closed polyline; holes are separate loops on the INNER layer.
- Real size in mmSet the output width; height follows the image. DXF units are millimetres.
- Three trace modesOutlines for cutting, centre line for single strokes, edges for photos.
- Noise and smoothingIgnore specks, smooth curves and simplify to fewer points.
- Path previewSee the paths over the image, with outer shapes and holes in different colours.
- DXF and SVGR12 ASCII DXF (POLYLINE) that opens almost everywhere, plus an SVG.
How to use the Image to DXF Converter
- Add an image Drop a PNG, JPG or WebP. Dark shapes on a light background trace best.
- Check the paths Look at the preview. Change the threshold, turn on Invert or raise Ignore specks if needed.
- Set the size Type the width in millimetres. The height is calculated from the image.
- Download Click Convert to DXF + SVG and open the DXF in LightBurn, Fusion 360, LibreCAD or your CNC software.

When to use it
- Turn a logo into a DXF for laser cutting signs and keychains.
- Make CNC router or plasma cutting paths from a silhouette.
- Trace a hand drawing for single-line engraving or a pen plotter.
- Bring a scanned part outline into CAD as a starting sketch.
- Create vinyl and stencil cut files from simple artwork.
Tips for the best result
- Use a high-contrast image: black artwork on a white background gives the cleanest paths.
- For logos with a transparent background, keep Use transparency of PNG logos on.
- Raise Simplify for fewer points on long smooth curves; lower it for small detailed text.
- Check the scale in your CAD or laser software after import – it should match the width you typed.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a PNG to DXF?
Drop the PNG on the Img Stop Image to DXF Converter, check the paths in the preview, set the width in millimetres and click Convert to DXF + SVG. The DXF downloads straight away and opens in CAD, laser and CNC software.
Are the paths closed?
Yes. In Outlines mode every shape is a closed polyline, and holes are their own closed loops. Outer loops run counter-clockwise and holes clockwise, which CNC software uses to tell inside from outside.
Which DXF version is it?
An ASCII DXF in the R12 (AC1009) format with POLYLINE entities and units set to millimetres. R12 is the most widely supported DXF version, so it opens in AutoCAD, Fusion 360, LibreCAD, Inkscape, LightBurn and most CNC programs.
Can it trace a photo?
Photos have no clear shapes, so use Edges mode to get lines along the edges, or Outlines with a manual threshold for a stencil look. Logos, icons, silhouettes and line drawings give the best results.
What is centre line tracing?
Centre line mode draws one line through the middle of each stroke instead of an outline around it. It is used for single-line engraving, pen plotters and V-carving.
Is my image uploaded?
No. The tracing and the DXF file are made in your browser on your own device.
